Match 10 Speed - Shimano Deore 12 Speed has arrived, bringing the technology first found in the flagship XTR groupset to the price range most commonly found on "entry level" bikes. For most cyclists, it's not news that affects them - at least not immediately.
Low tech is not a new concept; last year the SLX dropped in a 12 speed, and if you're buying a new $3.5-4k bike this is the Shimano gear you'll see mixed. It works very well too.

Riders aren't likely to go out and buy the new Deore M6100 as a group; if you are buying separate parts you mix and match based on the best deal you can find.. or maybe like us, just go straight to XT. However, it gives product managers an idea of what your next bike will be as an option from the NX Eagle. What matters is that a new level of performance is coming to riders looking for their first mountain bike. And once you've invested in a Shimano system, it's worth the brakes or road upgrade, because you don't have to replace half the parts or buy a new rear wheel.

For a Shimano fan like us, this is a big deal. Upgrading to 12-speed is still challenging, with Shimano Microspline freehub groups still hard to find rear wheels - and you're looking at around $100 just to make your old wheels work with a new drivetrain. If you're going to drop the bottom to upgrade to a 12 speed you're going to spend more and go XT anyway. But being able to buy a bike already equipped with Hyperglide+ means you can upgrade in less time.
Another interesting thing about this release is that Deore - known as the MTB group at the lowest price - is not only available in 12 speed, but also in 11 and 10 speed options. But what that means?
With Deore available in 12, 11, and 10 speed options, you now have a cheaper repair option if you break your Shimano derailleur during that bike ride, or if you're stuck with a chain and cage . The Deore chain will work on the drive, and most riders won't register the difference between a $24 Deore HG+ chain and a $45 XT chain. A Deore derailleur will set you back $55. If you consider the cost of the XT is $115, this is one hell of a deal.
Assuming you've been taking good care of your bike, you'll be replacing your old chain and chainring. Whether you're riding a 10 or 11 speed, the range and performance found in the new Shimano Hyperglide is a world apart from what you've ridden before.

If I'm looking for high performance while feeding the bottom, I'll do the brake and shift levers. You can go with a cheap derailleur; although I find that the entry level Shimano derailleurs are not very durable in the long term, if you break a lot, long term durability is not important.
The best part of the new 12-speed unit is not only the speed of the gear changes but also the feel of the lever has been improved. The best part of the new release is the fact that 10-speed is not only supported, but you can combine new features and change with old ones. If you still want your 2-3 year old bike with a 10 speed drive train, the new Deore range opens up new options.
If you don't have 4-piston brakes, they have gotten better in recent years. Like, very good. I recently spent some time riding a Norco Sight 2020 equipped with the new SLX 4-piston brakes and if I hadn't looked at them, I wouldn't have noticed a difference between the SLX and XT. The step down to Deore drops the toolless adjustment and free stroke adjustment found in the XT, but if it works the same or close to it, that's it.

Our choice for Deore brakes is definitely the 4-pistons - the 2-piston designs are better for performance riding where weight plays a big role. If you're looking to save weight you'll want to buy a larger package, and the 4-pistons of suspension will give you the most bang for your buck.
