B06 Aircraft - The Bell 206 is a family of biplane, monoplane, and biplane helicopters manufactured by Bell Helicopter at its Mirabell, Quebec facility. Originally developed as the Bell YOH-4 for the US Army Light Observation Helicopter program, the helicopter was not selected by the Army. Bell redesigned the airframe and successfully marketed the aircraft as the five-seat Bell 206A JetRanger. The new design was eventually selected by the Army as the OH-58 Kiowa.

Bell also developed the seven-place Longranger, later offered with a twin option as the TwinRanger, while Tridare Helicopters offers a similar Longanger conversion called the Gemini ST. The ICAO-assigned model designation "B06" is used in flight applications for the Jet Ranger and Long Ranger, and the designation "B06T" is used for the twin-turbo.

On October 14, 1960, the US Navy solicited responses from 25 aircraft manufacturers to the Army's request for proposals (RFP) for a light observation helicopter (LOH). Bell beat out competition from 12 other manufacturers, including Hiller Aircraft and Hughes Tool Company, Aircraft Division.

Bell developed the D-250 design into the Bell 206 aircraft, designated the YOH-4A in 1962, and produced five prototype aircraft for the Army's test and evaluation phase. The first prototype flew on December 8, 1962.

The YOH-4A is also known as the "ugly duckling" compared to other aircraft.

After flying the Bell, Hughes, and Fairchild-Heller prototypes, the Hughes OH-6 was selected in May 1965.

When the YOH-4A was phased out by the military, Bell was about to solve the problem of marketing the aircraft. In addition to image problems, the helicopter lacked cargo space and provided cramped seats for only three scheduled passengers. The solution was a redesigned, thinner, more aesthetically pleasing hull that added 16 feet.

A Bell executive contributed to the redesign by drawing on a two-line design running from the fuselage to the tail.

The redesign was designated the Bell 206A, and Bell President Edwin J. Duke called it the JetRanger, a development of the popular 47J Ranger.

Bell suggests the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X will replace five-seat versions of the 206 from 2015 and compete with the Robinson R66.

The 206L LongRanger is an extended variant with seating for seven. Stretched by a total of 30 inches (760 mm), the body adds two rear seats between the front and rear seats. Since 1975, Bell has produced more than 1,700 LongRangers in all different variants. In 1981, a military version, the 206L TexasRanger, was released. The original 206L used the Allison 250-C20B engine, and a series of upgraded models replaced the engine with more powerful versions. The 206L-1 used the 250-C28 and the 206L-3 and 206L-4 used the 250-C30P.

In both applications, the 250-C30P drops from 650 hp for takeoff and 501 hp continuously. The 206L-3 is a transmission limited to 435 horsepower for takeoff, and the 206L-4 is a transmission limited to 495 horsepower. The reduced C30P rating provides an advantage in hot-day, high-altitude operations because it can produce rated horsepower at higher altitudes and temperatures, where as applications using the maximum sea-level denim rating, performance deteriorates rapidly as temperatures rise. and heights 206L-3 and L-4 are not offered in a twin configuration under this model designation.

In 2007, Bell announced the 206L-1 and 206L-3 upgrade programs, designed to convert the aircraft to the 206L-4 configuration. The modified aircraft are designated 206L-1+ and 206L-3+. Changes included aero body structural components (including a new tail), an improved transmission, an upgraded gin for the L-1, all with a 300-pound maximum gross weight increase and an increase in performance.

The TwinRanger name dates back to the mid-1980s when Bell developed the 400 TwinRanger, but it never ceased production.

In 1989, Tridair Helicopters began developing a twin variant of the LongRanger, the Gemini ST. The first flight of the prototype took place on January 16, 1991, while full FAA certification was granted in November. Certification converts LongRanger 206L-1s, L-3s and L-4s to the Gemini ST configuration.

In mid-1994, the Gemini ST was certified as the first single/twin aircraft, allowing it to operate as a single or twin aircraft in all phases of flight.

The Bell 206LT TwinRanger was a new production model that was equivalent to the Gemini ST Tridair and was based on the 206L-4. 33 206LTs were built, the first delivered in January 1994 and the last in 1997. The TwinRanger was largely replaced by the new Bell 427 in the Bell lineup.

The first Bell 206A flew on January 10, 1966, and the aircraft was introduced at the Helicopter Association of America (HAA) convention later that month. On October 20, 1966, the Jet Ranger received FAA certification. JetRanger deliveries to customers began on January 13, 1967, and the first aircraft were purchased by Harry Hawley, CEO of Holimatic and previous owner of the Bell Ranger.

In 1968, the US Navy selected the 206A as its primary trainer, the TH-57 Sea Ranger. The Army eventually selected the 206A for a light observation helicopter as the OH-58 Kiowa.

The basic JetRanger shape and design remained unchanged from 1967, but Bell introduced the 206B JetRanger II in 1971. In 1977, the 206B-3 JetRanger III was introduced with a modified tail rotor and stronger engine. JetRanger is popular in the news media for traffic and news reports. The LongRanger is commonly used as an air ambulance and a corporate transport. On September 1, 1982, pilot H. Ross Perot, Jr. and Jay Coburn left Dallas, Texas with the "Spirit of Texas" a Bell 206L-2 (N3911Z). They returned on September 30, 29 days and 3 hours later, flying the first helicopter around the world.

In 1983, Australian businessman Dick Smith became the first helicopter pilot to fly solo around the world in 260 hours. During the voyage, he landed his 206B-3 (S/N 3653; VH-DIK) on preemptive container ships to refuel between Japan and the Aleutian Islands.

In 1993, the US Army selected the Bell 206B-3 as the winner of a new training helicopter competition to serve as its primary training helicopter, the TH-67 Creek. The number of TH-67s being delivered by the military is too small to affect the civilian market.

On July 22, 1994, Ron Bower landed his 206B-3 (N206AJ) in Hurst, Texas, setting a new record for a helicopter around the world. Bauer departed on June 24 and returned after 24 days, 4 hours, 36 minutes, and 24 seconds at an average speed of 35.62 knots (40.99 mph, 65.97 km/h).

On August 1, 1977, famed U-2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers was piloting a helicopter for KNBC Channel 4 in West Los Angeles, California when the plane crashed, killing him and cameraman George Spears. They were filming a wildfire in Santa Barbara County in the station's helicopter and were leaving the area.

On August 27, 1990, musician Stevie Ray Vaughan, pilot Jeff Brown, and three crew members Eric Clapton, Bobby Brooks, Nigel Brown, and Colin Smith were killed in a fatal 206B crash.

On October 25, 1991, a Bell 206 carrying rock concert promoter Bill Graham, his girlfriend Melissa Gould, and pilot Steve Kahn crashed into a power transmission tower west of Vallejo, California, killing all aboard.
