m4a1 vs m16

M4a1 Vs M16 - Some of the best shooting we have experienced has been done outdoors with our favorite long guns!!! Most of you who follow the PSA blog know that we love to get questions from our readers The nerd in us can't let that time tell us about gun history!!! Today we decided to answer a question from Jamila C from Fairburn, Georgia Jamila wanted to know more about the differences between the M16 and M4 platforms So Jamila….lucky you!!! We at PSA love to talk about guns, especially long guns!!!!

Jamila….before you start, please understand that these two platforms are similar in nature, as you can easily tell from the picture above! Historically, we want you to understand that both rifle platforms, the M16 and the M4 carbine, are semi-automatic rifles that were born here in the beloved United States. The M16, introduced into service with the US Army in 1964, was originally designed for semi-automatic fire mode (the ability to manually switch between short burst and automatic fire possibilities). In 1994, the US Armed Forces decided to replace the M16 with the M4 (manufactured by Colt under the name XM4). The United States Armed Forces and armed forces around the world now call on the M4-style rifle to save their lives and the lives of the civilians they protect.

The M16 is generally recognized by its longer barrel than its counterpart, the M4 The M16 has a standard barrel length of 16 inches while the M4 comes with a standard barrel length of 14.5 inches. This shorter barrel length made the rifle lighter (among other things) and led to the adoption of the M4 over the M16 in the mid-90s. Both rifles accept any standard STANAG magazine (which includes G.mags, P-mags, Lancer, DD, and the list goes on!!!!) On the M16 you usually get a solid stationary stock, while the stock on the M4 is usually coll. Collapses (to allow for a better purchase of the rifle based on the shooter's preference). Again, this is one of the features that have made it an attractive option for the armed forces. If you notice, the standard M16 comes with a handle at the top, which is used to carry and even mount special shooting glasses. M4s usually come flat top with some sort of rail system (M1913 Picatinny, Key-mod, M-Lock, etc.). This difference makes the M4 models more suitable for tactical applications Again, that led to the choice of this rifle over the M16

Jamila, one thing to note is that both the M16 and M4 platforms (military rifles) offered AR style rifles for civilian use. The main difference between military rifles and those used for civilian use is what we at PSA like to call the “FUN Switch”…..or in layman terms…. Automatic detonation capability Which is probably the best!!! Who wants their crazy uncle Rob to have access to an automatic rifle that can fire?!?!?

***Remember... Safe guns are an open bolt, an empty chamber and an empty magazine If you are new to firearms and want to learn more, PSA strongly recommends that you attend, enroll in, and attend a comprehensive and reputable firearms safety course. Firearms safety is our responsibility. |

Soldiers, special operators and Marines will soon carry first-of-its-kind rifles and bullet-firing light machine guns designed to overcome the small arms limitations of previous decades.

The next-generation squad weapons program gives US troops the highly lethal 6.8mm round after the Pentagon spent 40 years looking for an alternative to the 5.56mm round that has carried troops into combat for the past 65 years.

American infantry squads with 5.56 mm rifles and light machine guns now face the challenge. If those units were to engage in firefights with Russian, Chinese, or mostly Kalishen militants, they would both shoot and kill from a distance.

Most potential adversaries in the world carry 7.62 mm weapons at ranges of 1,000 to 1,500 meters. The American units' short arm depth ranges from 800m to 1100m And that distance is only achieved by dedicated marksmen and machine gunners at platoon level

The Army expects the next-generation squad weapon to reach its first units by next year. An unloaded XM5 rifle is two kilograms heavier than an unloaded M4 But the XM250 is four pounds lighter than the M249 SAW

With the new 6.8mm long rifle, all squad members can fire fewer rounds and do more damage to targets — bringing a heavier but more accurate and powerful weapon to close combat, Army officials said. .

This program is the first to produce operational deck weapons for mass production and use The as-yet-unknown Army unit is expected to receive the NGSW-rifle and NGSW-automatic rifle, the XM5 and XM250, which will be called the M5 and M250 in October 2023 or earlier.

The Army is selecting a new weapon system to replace the M-4 and M-249 among troops in the coming years.

Giving soldiers in the Vietnam War a faster and lighter rifle chambered in 5.56mm and the M16 still meant more rounds for less recoil. But the change meant that shooters could not hit targets more than 300 meters in a row.

The new 6.8mm round fills the gap between 5.56mm and 7.62mm, the heavier round soldiers use in medium machine guns and older sniper rifles, officials said.

This move is not cheap Over the next decade, the two weapon types alone could cost $4.7 billion, with another $2.7 billion for NGSW fire control or M157 advanced optics, according to official documents. That dollar amount is more common for tanks, jet fighters or ships

Military leaders have argued against the limited funding of close combat forces in recent years, particularly given the disproportionate number of casualties and deaths some forces have absorbed in combat.

Both weapons should reach military units by 2023. But the bulk of close combat forces will have to wait Production tasks, annual budgets, and the implementation of training and field operations plans mean that the Army's 120,000 close combat forces will not see a full deployment of the weapon for at least several years or even a decade.

The Army's 11B Infantry, 19D Cavalry Scouts, 12B Combat Engineers, 68W Combat Medics and 13D Forward Observers are enlisted to deliver NGSW. The rest of the Army will carry the M4 and M249 SAW for several decades to come, officials said.

Marines and Marine Raiders have participated in multiple test events, and Corps officials said the service is monitoring the Army's program but has not yet decided whether to accept weapons or ammunition.

The NGSW program called for an "intermediate caliber"—a heavier projectile and longer range than the 5.56mm, but lighter and more mobile than the 7.62mm.

From there, three semifinalists—Sig Sauer, Textron Systems and Lone Star Future Weapons—in partnership with General Dynamics built the solution. The winner, Sig Sauer, created a more traditional assault rifle design, with many of the same ergonomic features and feel as the existing M4.

The Program Executive Office-Soldier and Army Futures Command Cross Functional Team-Soldier Lethality led the NGSW program.

Ultimately, XM5 shooters will drop 70 rounds and carry an additional 5 pounds total of ammunition, optics and ammunition compared to the M4. The XM250 light machine gun will lose 200 rounds and add 3.6 pounds of net weight compared to the M249 SAW load. The XM250 is a lighter weapon, but the ammunition is heavier, and the new optics system adds 2.6 pounds.

The combined accuracy and efficiency of the weapon, ammunition and optics means fewer rounds are needed to hit and disable a target, officials said.

The system "provides incapacitation potential (overlap) against the full range of targets that close combat forces will face in near-term and immediate large-scale combat operations."
