Today we decided to answer a question from Jamila C from Fairburn, Georgia Jamila wanted to know more about the differences between the M16 and M4 platforms So Jamila….lucky you!!! We at PSA love to talk about guns, especially long guns!!!!
Jamila….before you start, please understand that these two platforms are similar in nature, as you can easily tell from the picture above! Historically, we want you to understand that both rifle platforms, the M16 and the M4 carbine, are semi-automatic rifles that were born here in the beloved United States. The M16, introduced into service with the US Army in 1964, was originally designed for semi-automatic fire mode (the ability to manually switch between short burst and automatic fire possibilities). In 1994, the US Armed Forces decided to replace the M16 with the M4 (manufactured by Colt under the name XM4). The United States Armed Forces and armed forces around the world now call on the M4-style rifle to save their lives and the lives of the civilians they protect.

The M16 is generally recognized by its longer barrel than its counterpart, the M4 The M16 has a standard barrel length of 16 inches while the M4 comes with a standard barrel length of 14.5 inches. This shorter barrel length made the rifle lighter (among other things) and led to the adoption of the M4 over the M16 in the mid-90s. Both rifles accept any standard STANAG magazine (which includes G.mags, P-mags, Lancer, DD, and the list goes on!!!!) On the M16 you usually get a solid stationary stock, while the stock on the M4 is usually coll. Collapses (to allow for a better purchase of the rifle based on the shooter's preference). Again, this is one of the features that have made it an attractive option for the armed forces. If you notice, the standard M16 comes with a handle at the top, which is used to carry and even mount special shooting glasses. M4s usually come flat top with some sort of rail system (M1913 Picatinny, Key-mod, M-Lock, etc.). This difference makes the M4 models more suitable for tactical applications Again, that led to the choice of this rifle over the M16

Jamila, one thing to note is that both the M16 and M4 platforms (military rifles) offered AR style rifles for civilian use. The main difference between military rifles and those used for civilian use is what we at PSA like to call the “FUN Switch”…..or in layman terms…. Automatic detonation capability Which is probably the best!!! Who wants their crazy uncle Rob to have access to an automatic rifle that can fire?!?!?

Military leaders have argued against the limited funding of close combat forces in recent years, particularly given the disproportionate number of casualties and deaths some forces have absorbed in combat.

Both weapons should reach military units by 2023. But the bulk of close combat forces will have to wait Production tasks, annual budgets, and the implementation of training and field operations plans mean that the Army's 120,000 close combat forces will not see a full deployment of the weapon for at least several years or even a decade.
